• I recall distinctly, after going out on another binge, my wife and in-laws asking me, “I don’t understand, when your life and family and all you love is on the line, why you CHOOSE to drink.” The truth is, I didn’t understand it either. It was unexplainable. I had been in the program of AA for over a decade, with several long stretches of…[Read more]

That is definitely a legitimate worry. Have you talked to your sponsor about it? Can you be honest enough with yourself to admit it if you’re not spiritually fit?

  • The 9th step promises DO come true. “We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.” Nobody came to AA on a winning streak. Our past is our past. I am grateful for the hand of AA for helping me to learn more about myself in recovery than I ever knew about myself before recovery.

    God heals all.

  • My ego has gotten me into a lot of trouble throughout my life. Its said that most alcoholics, myself included, are egomaniacs with an inferiority complex. How true that statement is.

Ever since I can remember, I just wanted to be liked. I wanted to be accepted. I wanted to have what other people had. So everything I did, I did for me. Rarely did…[Read more]

I know the feeling completely. You came to the right place. Keep coming back.

I know the feeling, Kevin. I have had three stretches of sobriety, each 2.5 years or more. Glad you made it back!

  • How to handle cravings has been a huge issue for many recovering alcoholics – myself included. We’re going to have them. In medical terms, a lot of times, cravings and the mental urge to drink can be attributed to PAWS, or Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome. When you enter sobriety, your body and mind goes into shock. All of a sudden, a chemical that…[Read more]

Hi Alison. Addiction is… Well… Cunning, baffling and powerful. We do things that we would NEVER normally do. The only thing that matters is the next drunk or drug. But you’re not alone. And you never have to have another drink or another drug ever again. “Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path.” Stick with it.…[Read more]

Hi Frank. Sorry for the late reply. Come to this site and others. Get to an AA meeting. Get a sponsor. Get honest. Find a God of your understanding. Work the steps. This program is simple, but it’s not easy.

Don’t forget to play that tape through. These memories of early recovery are the ones we need to remember when we think it’s a good idea to use again. Glad you’re here.

Hey there, Rosemary. It’s perfectly OK to be afraid. I remember my first meeting vividly. Just go. Nobody came to their first AA meeting on a winning streak. I certainly didn’t think to myself one day “You know, I think I’ll go see what AA is all about”. I came kicking and screaming. You’ll find so many people just like YOU. You’re not alone.

  • Today’s Hazeldon “Thought for the Day” was thought provoking. What are your thoughts?

We’re in A.A. for two main reasons: to keep sober ourselves and to help others to keep sober. It’s a well-known fact that helping others is a big part of keeping sober yourself. It’s also been proved that it’s very hard to keep sober all by yourself. A lot of…

  • I heard this on the radio one morning a while back and the question rings in my brain all the time: What if the only thing you had tomorrow is what you thanked God for today?

It’s a loaded question. There were so many nights I spent drinking and ignoring God’s existence that I didn’t even consider that I was never promised that there would be a…[Read more]
