B-rad started the topic Disease of mind AND body in the forum Alcohol Recovery Group 8 years, 6 months ago
I recall distinctly, after going out on another binge, my wife and in-laws asking me, “I don’t understand, when your life and family and all you love is on the line, why you CHOOSE to drink.” The truth is, I didn’t understand it either. It was unexplainable. I had been in the program of AA for over a decade, with several long stretches of…[Read more]

B-rad replied to the topic How can we not regret the past. in the forum Men in Recovery 8 years, 6 months ago
The 9th step promises DO come true. “We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.” Nobody came to AA on a winning streak. Our past is our past. I am grateful for the hand of AA for helping me to learn more about myself in recovery than I ever knew about myself before recovery.

B-rad started the topic Easing God Out in the forum Alcohol Recovery Group 8 years, 6 months ago
My ego has gotten me into a lot of trouble throughout my life. Its said that most alcoholics, myself included, are egomaniacs with an inferiority complex. How true that statement is.
Ever since I can remember, I just wanted to be liked. I wanted to be accepted. I wanted to have what other people had. So everything I did, I did for me. Rarely did…[Read more]

B-rad started the topic Dealing with cravings in the forum Alcohol Recovery Group 8 years, 6 months ago
How to handle cravings has been a huge issue for many recovering alcoholics – myself included. We’re going to have them. In medical terms, a lot of times, cravings and the mental urge to drink can be attributed to PAWS, or Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome. When you enter sobriety, your body and mind goes into shock. All of a sudden, a chemical that…[Read more]

B-rad replied to the topic Remorse in the forum Narcotics Recovery Group 8 years, 6 months ago
Hi Alison. Addiction is… Well… Cunning, baffling and powerful. We do things that we would NEVER normally do. The only thing that matters is the next drunk or drug. But you’re not alone. And you never have to have another drink or another drug ever again. “Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path.” Stick with it.…[Read more]

Today’s Hazeldon “Thought for the Day” was thought provoking. What are your thoughts?
We’re in A.A. for two main reasons: to keep sober ourselves and to help others to keep sober. It’s a well-known fact that helping others is a big part of keeping sober yourself. It’s also been proved that it’s very hard to keep sober all by yourself. A lot of…

B-rad started the topic What if the only thing you had tomorrow is what you thanked God for today? in the forum Alcohol Recovery Group 8 years, 7 months ago
I heard this on the radio one morning a while back and the question rings in my brain all the time:Â What if the only thing you had tomorrow is what you thanked God for today?
It’s a loaded question. There were so many nights I spent drinking and ignoring God’s existence that I didn’t even consider that I was never promised that there would be a…[Read more]

B-rad started the topic What step is your "favorite"? in the forum Alcohol Recovery Group 8 years, 7 months ago
When I first got honest with myself and started working these steps, I found so much healing through working each of the 12 steps. However, some of the steps I liked – others I did not like so much.
For my continued recovery, I find step 10 to be my “favorite step”. I heard a friend at the tables say that “the softest pillow at night is a clear…[Read more]
