imho: almost all alcoholism is based on the attempt to drink away feelings we don’t want to have. the trap is that it works at first, then gradually takes more and more alcohol until it stops working all together. my personal experience in AA has taught me how to deal with those feelings without drugs or alcohol.

aside from going to meetings as an observer, you could also go to the local AA office (district office?) to look for potential members,
or stop by an alano club, just for coffee

professionals often start their own closed groups.
this is probably the best idea, since your anonymity is gone as soon as you see a patient in an open meeting. your presence, or the slightest little thing you say could offend, and new comers are especially sensitive; and this could effectively your ability as a therapist.
