Kerri, Congratulations on your clean time! AND, that you recognize the link between addiction and mental health. I’ve personally dealt with both in the past and I am still, unfortunately, watching it affect others. It is a common link (as I see it) and more prevalent than what attention is being given to it.

Wow Maude! I know its been quite some time since this post but thank you for sharing. DD is something that I really focused on in the begininng of my sobriety. Like you, every attempt that my doctor was making was being sabatoged by me not being able to stay away from alcohol to see if the medicine would even work. My diagnosis has always been…[Read more]

Lola, Thank you for your response. As far as always dating guys who drink. Mostly yes. Not because I picked a drinker over a non-drinker but it was the group I was associated with. Pair that with the very wide spread “socially acceptable” drink and its not likely (not impossible) but not likely that I will not date people that dont drink. With…[Read more]

My sobriety forces me to be aware. I have a friend that I think has a problem. I hear his responses to questions about it like “I enjoy an adult beverage” and “it helps me to relax” Well it has been hard for me not to say.. “Well that doesnt mean you should!”. I’m realizing that I can’t save everyone. Even when I can use mirror imaging and see…[Read more]

LOTS of luck and, more than that, prayers your way! Playing out scenarios is the BEST way to handle situations you may come faced with. It forces us to slow down our thinking versus just jumping to the first thought of “Oh, I could have just one”.. We never have just one lol!!! I’m so glad to hear that you want to try to make a meeting! Thats…[Read more]

Jane, I’m so glad that you see the justification behavior!!! This is great news because as you try to change that old devil will try to trick you everytime. Stop the justification thoughts when they happen! You mentioned that you were afraid you would fail? As a recovering alcoholic I would have to ask what you are succeeding in? Look. You are…[Read more]

Lola!! I am so very proud of you!!! Great choice!
As far as “coming out” about it. You do it when you are ready. My personal experience was to just start telling people that I dont drink anymore and that I just want to have healthier things in my life. Chances are (and you may be ready to hear it or not but as an alcoholic I needed to face the…[Read more]

Yes you should. Let me tell you why. I always told myself (turns out this is called justification) that I never had any of those things. A dui, lost a job, ect. It will happen eventually because as alcoholics we dont know when to stop because we cant. Eventually you will drink everyday because it is a progressive disease. Im not saying you are an…[Read more]
